Google Ads questions, answered
Short answers, with sources, to the questions people ask most about Google Ads.
Costs
How much does Google charge per click?
Google charges whatever the ad auction sets for each click, often less than your maximum bid, so there is no fixed price. WordStream's 2026 benchmark of US search campaigns puts the median at $5.42 per click, ranging from $1.63 in arts and entertainment to $9.87 for legal services.
Full answerHow do you calculate cost per click?
Divide your total click cost by your total clicks: average CPC equals cost divided by clicks. If you spend $600 and get 200 clicks, your average CPC is $3. Google Ads shows this in the Avg. CPC column, while the price of each single click is set by the auction.
Full answerHow do I claim the Google Ads promotional credit?
You claim it as a new advertiser: choose the offer when you sign up, or enter the code under Billing, then Promotions, in an account less than 14 days old with a payment method added. In the US you then have 60 days to spend the required amount, and the credit typically arrives within 35 days after that.

Hiring and platforms
How much does a Google Ads freelancer or agency charge?
There is no standard price: freelancers and agencies charge a flat monthly fee, a percentage of ad spend, an hourly rate or a mix. Industry estimates put agency flat fees at $2,500 to $10,000 a month, or $500 to $2,500 plus 5% to 15% of spend, and typical US freelancers on Upwork charge $42 to $93 an hour.
Full answerShould I run Google Ads myself or hire a freelancer or agency?
Run Google Ads yourself if your budget is small, your setup is simple and you have time each week to manage it. Hire a freelancer when you need senior skills on one or two channels, and an agency when you need a team for strategy, creative, tracking and several channels. Either way, keep the account in your name.
Full answerIs Microsoft Ads cheaper than Google Ads?
Per click, Microsoft Ads is often cheaper: Microsoft claims 19% lower CPCs than a leading ad platform, citing an EMARKETER forecast for Q1 2026. But Bing has far less search volume, so you get fewer clicks, and a cheaper click only saves money if it converts as well. Compare cost per conversion in your own test.
Full answerCan I import my Google Ads campaigns into Microsoft Ads?
Yes. Microsoft Advertising has a built-in Google Import: you sign in with your Google account, pick campaigns, and it copies campaigns, ad groups, keywords, ads, budgets and most settings. You can run it once or on a schedule, but videos, automated rules and IP exclusions don't come across, and some bid strategies and negatives change.
Full answerDo Google Ads work for B2B?
Yes, Google Ads works for B2B when people search for what you sell and you measure qualified leads, not just form fills. B2B clicks are expensive and sales cycles long, so send CRM outcomes such as qualified or won leads back to Google Ads and let bidding optimize for leads that turn into revenue.

Campaign types
Does Performance Max take traffic from my Search campaigns?
Sometimes, but Search wins when it has the exact query: if a search term is identical to an exact match keyword in your Search campaign, Google prioritizes that campaign over Performance Max. For other searches the two compete on relevance and Ad Rank, so Performance Max can win queries your phrase and broad keywords would also match.
Full answerCan you add negative keywords to Performance Max, and see its search terms?
Yes. You can add campaign-level negative keywords and negative keyword lists to Performance Max, and account-level negatives apply too, but they only block Search and Shopping inventory. Performance Max also has a search terms report that shows which searches triggered your ads and lets you add negatives from it.
Full answerWhat is the difference between Demand Gen and Performance Max?
Performance Max serves across all Google Ads inventory, including Search and Shopping, and uses audience signals that Google may go beyond. Demand Gen serves only on YouTube, Discover, Gmail, Maps and the Display Network, uses audience targeting you choose, and lets you pick channels per ad group. Use Performance Max to capture demand, Demand Gen to create it.
Full answerDid Demand Gen replace Discovery ads?
Yes. Google launched Demand Gen in October 2023 as the next generation of Discovery campaigns and upgraded existing Discovery campaigns to Demand Gen through early 2024. Discover is still a placement inside Demand Gen, which has since also absorbed Video action campaigns and is now absorbing Display campaigns.
Full answerIs Google turning on AI Max in my Search campaigns automatically?
Yes, in some cases. AI Max is on by default in new Search campaigns, and starting in September 2026 Google automatically upgrades existing campaigns that use automatically created assets or the campaign-level broad match setting. Dynamic Search Ads campaigns follow from February 2027. You can turn AI Max or its single features off in campaign settings.

AI search
How do Google ads show up in AI Overviews and AI Mode?
Google shows ads inside or next to AI Overviews and AI Mode answers, labeled "Sponsored". Existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns are eligible automatically, using the same auction and bidding as other Search ads. You can't target these placements on their own or opt out of them separately from Search.
Full answerDo you need AI Max to show ads in AI Overviews?
No. Existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns are eligible for ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode without AI Max. AI Max widens matching: like broad match, it can match your ads to the AI answer itself, while exact and phrase match keywords only qualify on searches with direct commercial intent.
Full answerHow do I turn off AI features in Google Ads?
You switch them off one by one, since there is no single setting for all of them: AI Max and its features in Search campaign settings, asset optimization in Performance Max, optimized targeting in Demand Gen ad groups, and auto-apply recommendations. You can't opt out of ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode separately from Search.

Bidding
How many conversions does Smart Bidding need?
Google sets no minimum to turn on most Smart Bidding strategies, and says Target CPA works with no conversion history. Target ROAS is the exception: Search and Shopping campaigns need at least 15 conversions in the past 30 days. To judge results, Google recommends periods with at least 30 conversions (50 for Target ROAS).
Full answerWhat should I set my target CPA to?
Start with your actual average CPA from the last 30 days, which is what Google's recommended target is based on, and check that it is below what a conversion is worth to you. A target far below your current CPA can cut conversion volume, so change it at most once per conversion cycle and judge results after 1-2 cycles.
Full answerAre Target CPA and Target ROAS standalone bid strategies again?
Yes, in name only: starting in June 2026, Google Ads shows Target CPA and Target ROAS as standalone bid strategies for Search campaigns again, not as options inside Maximize conversions and Maximize conversion value. Google says bidding works exactly the same. The real behavior change was a separate August 17, 2026 update for budget-limited campaigns.

Tracking and consent
How do I test Google Ads conversion tracking?
Run a Tag Assistant check: launch it from the conversion action's status in Goals, then Summary in Google Ads (or from Google Tag Manager's Preview), then trigger the conversion on your site to confirm the tag fires. A test conversion only appears in reports if it follows a real ad click, and reporting can take 3 to 24 hours.
Full answerWhat does "No recent conversions" mean in Google Ads?
"No recent conversions" means Google Ads has seen your conversion tag but recorded no conversions for that action in the last 7 days. Since July 2026 Google has been renaming this status "Awaiting conversions". It is often not a tracking error: new actions, paused campaigns or low traffic cause it, but a broken trigger can too.
Full answerWhy are my call conversions not being tracked?
Call conversions usually go missing because call reporting is off, calls are shorter than your minimum call length, or the website snippet isn't showing a Google forwarding number. Google forwarding numbers exist only in 30 countries as of November 2026, and in the US and Canada, recorded calls count only if Google's AI rates them as qualified leads.
Full answerEnhanced conversions for web vs for leads: what's the difference?
The difference is where the sale happens: enhanced conversions for web improves measurement of conversions on your website using hashed customer data from the conversion page, while enhanced conversions for leads matches hashed lead form data with offline sales you import later. Google is combining both into one on/off setting, starting June 2026.
Full answerCan you import offline conversions without a GCLID?
Yes. With enhanced conversions for leads, you can upload offline conversions with a hashed email address or phone number instead of a GCLID, and Google matches them to signed-in Google accounts. Google still requires the GCLID if your website tag doesn't collect user-provided data from your lead form, so set that tag up first.
Full answerHow long until imported offline conversions show up?
Google says imported conversions usually appear within about 3 hours, and processing typically finishes within 12 hours, or up to 72 hours for GBRAID and WBRAID conversions. They are reported on the date of the original ad click, not the upload date, so check new uploads in the All conv. (by conv. time) column.
Full answerShould I use GA4 key events or the Google Ads tag for conversions?
Use the Google Ads tag for the conversions you bid on and GA4 key events for cross-channel reporting. Google lets you use both, but only the Google Ads tag records view-through conversions and supports the multi-source conversions beta. If you track the same action both ways, make only one version primary so bidding doesn't count it twice.
Full answerIs Google Consent Mode mandatory?
Not by law, and not everywhere: Google requires advertisers to collect consent from users in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland and send consent signals to Google. Without those signals you lose measurement, remarketing and ad personalization for that traffic. Consent mode is Google's standard way to send them from a website.
Full answerBasic vs advanced consent mode: what's the difference?
Basic consent mode blocks Google tags until the visitor answers the consent banner, so nothing is sent if they decline. Advanced consent mode loads tags immediately with consent denied by default and sends cookieless pings when visitors decline, which gives Google Ads a more detailed, advertiser-specific conversion model instead of a general one.

Shopping and Merchant Center
Why are my products disapproved in Merchant Center?
Products are usually disapproved because their data breaks Google's product data requirements or Shopping policies, or doesn't match the product page: a different price or availability, a broken link, a missing or wrong GTIN, or an image with promotional overlays. Merchant Center shows the exact reason for each product in the Needs attention tab under Products.
Full answerHow do I fix a Merchant Center misrepresentation issue?
You fix it by making your store transparent and consistent: the same business name, address, phone and email on your website and in Merchant Center, clear prices, shipping and return policies, and nothing misleading. Then request a review in Merchant Center, but only once everything is fixed, because failed reviews trigger a cool-down period that can get longer.
Full answerCan product images have promotional text or watermarks?
No. Google doesn't allow promotional text, prices, calls to action, watermarks, borders or added logos on the main product image in Merchant Center, and products with such overlays stay disapproved until the image is replaced. Text and logos that are physically part of the product or its packaging are allowed.
Full answerHow do I get my products to show up on Google Shopping?
Create a free Google Merchant Center account, verify and claim your website, add your business details, shipping and return policy, then upload your product data. Approved products can appear for free on Google Shopping. For paid Shopping ads, link Merchant Center to Google Ads and run a Standard Shopping or Performance Max campaign.
Full answerCan you change the country of sale on a Shopping campaign?
Yes. As of November 2026, Google has replaced country of sale with feed labels, and you can switch an existing Shopping campaign's feed label or country of sale in its Settings tab. What you still can't change is the linked Merchant Center account: for a different account, you need a new campaign.

Keywords and audiences
How is Quality Score calculated, and where do you see it?
Quality Score is a 1-10 keyword-level diagnostic in Google Ads Search campaigns, based on expected clickthrough rate, ad relevance and landing page experience, each rated against other advertisers who showed for the exact same search over the last 90 days. You see it by adding the Quality Score columns to your Keywords table.
Full answerWhat is an account-level negative keyword list?
An account-level negative keyword list is a single list in your Google Ads account settings that automatically blocks those terms across all search and shopping inventory in Search, Performance Max, Shopping, App, Smart and Local campaigns. As of November 2026 it holds up to 1,000 negative keywords, in broad, phrase or exact match.
Full answerWhich symbols can you use in negative keywords?
Google Ads recognizes three symbols in negative keywords: ampersands (&), accent marks (á) and asterisks (*). Periods are ignored, plus signs are usually ignored, and symbols such as ! @ % ^ = ; ~ ? and | cause an error. Quotation marks and square brackets only set phrase or exact match.
Full answerWhat is Customer Match and how does it work?
Customer Match is an audience built from your own customer data: you upload emails, phone numbers or mailing addresses, Google matches them to signed-in Google accounts, and you can reach or exclude those people on Search, the Shopping tab, YouTube, Gmail and Display. Targeting them directly requires 90 days of account history and over USD 50,000 lifetime spend.

Account and policy
How do I get my Google Ads account unsuspended?
You get a suspended Google Ads account back only through an appeal: fix the cause first, then click Contact Us in the suspension notification in your account and submit the appeal form, completing advertiser verification if Google asks. You have at least 6 months to appeal. Don't open a new account meanwhile, because it may also be suspended.
Full answerWhat does a "circumventing systems" suspension mean?
A circumventing systems suspension means Google believes you tried to trick or get around its ad review or enforcement, for example by cloaking, opening new accounts after a suspension, or giving false information during verification. Google treats it as an egregious violation: the account is suspended without warning and reinstated only in compelling circumstances.
Full answerWhat happens if I don't complete advertiser verification?
If you miss the advertiser verification deadline, Google pauses your Google Ads account and no ads run until you get verified. The deadline, a 30-day notice period under Google's policy, can't be extended. A pause is not a suspension: you keep access to the account and its reports, and Google unpauses it once verification is approved.
Full answerWhat documents do I need for advertiser verification, and how long does it take?
Organizations need a registration document, such as a certificate of incorporation, commercial register extract or IRS-issued letter, plus a photo ID of an authorized representative; individuals need a government-issued photo ID. Names must exactly match your payments profile. Google reviews each task in up to 5 business days, and in rare cases up to 30 days.
