Why are my call conversions not being tracked?

Rokas Golcas · Updated

Call conversions usually go missing because call reporting is off, calls are shorter than your minimum call length, or the website snippet isn't showing a Google forwarding number. Google forwarding numbers exist only in 30 countries as of November 2026, and in the US and Canada, recorded calls count only if Google's AI rates them as qualified leads.

Google Ads tracks calls in several ways, and each breaks for different reasons. First, check which kind of call conversion is missing.

Which type of call conversion are you using?

TypeWhat countsWhat it needs
Calls from adsCalls from call assets or location assets that last at least your minimum lengthCall reporting turned on (a Google forwarding number in the ad)
Calls to a number on your websiteCalls to a forwarding number your site shows to people who clicked an adThe Google tag plus a phone snippet on every page with your number
Clicks on a number on your mobile siteTaps on a phone number or call buttonNothing more, but Google counts only the click, not the call
Imported callsCalls you track in a CRM or call tracking systemYour own import, and Google forwarding numbers

Google says tracking calls from ads, calls from your website and imported calls all require Google forwarding numbers.

What are the most common causes?

  • Call reporting is off. Find it in Account settings. Turning it off shows your real number, but Google Ads then cannot track calls. Google suggests turning it off only if you want your own number or third-party call tracking.
  • Calls are shorter than your minimum call length. Shorter calls do not count. Compare your setting with real call durations in the "Call details" report in the Report Editor.
  • The conversion action is inactive or Secondary. Google advises checking that "Calls from ads" is active and set as a primary goal. Secondary actions show only in "All conversions".
  • Your country is not supported. As of November 2026, Google forwarding numbers exist in 30 countries, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, Spain and Italy. The phone number in your asset must have a country code from that list.
  • The website snippet does not swap the number. It must be on every page where your number appears, and the number in the snippet must match the number on the page exactly. The default tag tracks one number per page, and on mobile you must replace the clickable tel: link too. In Tag Manager, enter the number in national format, without the plus sign.
  • Google's AI did not qualify the call. When both phones are in the US or Canada, call recording is on by default for most businesses, and only calls Google's AI rates as qualified leads count. Calls that cannot be recorded fall back to your minimum call length.

Also note: since February 2026 you cannot create new call ads, and existing ones stop serving in February 2027, so use call assets.

How do you test it?

Google's test for website calls: search for your ad, click it (you pay for the click), and check that your site now shows a Google forwarding number. It can take up to an hour after setup to start working. If you test more than once, delete the "gwcc" cookie from your browser before clicking the ad again.

Then call, stay on longer than your minimum call length, and look for the call in the call details report. Visiting your site without an ad click shows your normal number, which is expected.

Before touching any code, I check call reporting and the minimum call length first: they explain a lot of missing calls. For general checks, see How do I test Google Ads conversion tracking? and my guide to Google Ads assets.
