Run a Tag Assistant check: launch it from the conversion action's status in Goals, then Summary in Google Ads (or from Google Tag Manager's Preview), then trigger the conversion on your site to confirm the tag fires. A test conversion only appears in reports if it follows a real ad click, and reporting can take 3 to 24 hours.
Testing conversion tracking has two layers. First, you check that the tag fires when someone converts on your site. Then, for an end-to-end check, you confirm that a conversion from a real ad click shows up in Google Ads.
How do you check that the tag fires?
Google Ads has Tag Assistant built in. Google describes the flow for conversion actions with an "Unverified", "Tag inactive" or "Needs attention" status:
- In Google Ads, go to Goals, then Summary.
- Hover over the conversion action's status and select Troubleshoot, then Continue.
- Enter your landing page or home page (Google advises this rather than the conversion page itself) and select Connect.
- On your site, complete the conversion: submit the form or place the order.
- Select Finish to see the results.
Google says conversion actions verified in the session update in your account after about 30 minutes.
If you use Google Tag Manager, click Preview in your workspace. It opens your site connected to Tag Assistant, so you can see which tags fired, in which order and on which trigger. Check that both the Google Ads conversion tag and the Conversion Linker fire on the right page or event.
Using enhanced conversions? The Diagnostics tab under Goals, Summary shows whether your customer data is coming through correctly.
How do you test with a real ad click?
Tag Assistant proves the tag works, but it does not add a conversion to your reports. Google says verified actions show "No recent conversions" until real conversions arrive, and website conversions are measured on actions people take after interacting with your ads.
For a full test, search for your ad, click it and complete the conversion. You pay for that click like any other. Before you do:
- Make sure auto-tagging is on. Google says it is needed to track website conversions on all browsers.
- Know whether the action is Primary or Secondary. Secondary actions show only in the "All conversions" column, not in "Conversions".
How long until the test conversion shows up?
Not instantly. Google's troubleshooting guide says conversion reporting can take 3 to 24 hours to update, and after you install or fix a tag, the status itself can take up to 48 hours to change.
When you look for it, filter by the day you clicked the ad. Google attributes conversions to the date of the click, not the date of the conversion.
In my experience, tracking rarely breaks on day one. It breaks later, after a new checkout, form plugin or cookie banner goes live. So repeat this test after every change like that, not only at launch. If your test shows nothing at all, see What does "No recent conversions" mean in Google Ads? and my guide to setting up Google Tag Manager for Google Ads.
